Guide to Using Vmware Via Citrix Virtual Classrooms

Step 1

The first time you start up VMware, you may have to agree to the licensing terms. Do so by choosing the yes radio button and clicking next.

Check yes to the License Agreement

Step 2

Once VMware has started, you may click "Open" Icon to locate a Virtual Machine. Once open has been selected, choose your H: drive as shown below:

Locating the Virtual Machine

After that please choose the correct folder containing the virtual machine you wish to open. Finding the correct file format

Step 3

Once inside, choose the .vmx file that you wish to open (there should only be one). However, in the case that there is NOT any .vmx files listed, the virtual machine may be a .vmc file. In that case, choose the file type drop-down box and choose "Virtual PC/Virtual Server Files (.vmc)" as shown below.

Choosing the correct file format

Then choose the correct .vmc file.

First .vmc file

The first time you launch a .vmc file you should see the following:

Importing VM

*IMPORTANT!

If the virtual machine you started was a .vmx file, you may experience 2 senarios:

1. VMware may ask if you moved or copied the Virtual Machine. Choose: "I copied it" (which is the default option).

2. It may report that the VM needs a unique identifier. If so, choose "create".

After the VM starts, you should be at a screen that looks similar to the following:

Normal VM

VMware works similar to Virtual PC, which you may have used in the past either using Citrix or otherwise. If you were to log into this Virtaul machine above, it requires you to press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, however, those keys will not work.

*Important!

You must use CTRL+ALT+INSERT to use Ctrl+Alt+Delete in a virtual machine using Vmware.

In addition, there are new features using Vmware. For instance, you can see in the screenshot above that at the top of the window there is an “Ethernet” button there. You can click on it to enable/disable the network interface, and click the arrow next to it to open a dropdown box and enable/disable multiple network interfaces.
